Silica Xynergy Board – STM32 meets Spartan-6

http://www.silica.com/products/highlight/product/silica-xynergy-board-stm32-meets-spartan-6.html

silica xilinx ST xynergy board iconThe Xynergy Board from SILICA combines an ARM Cortex-M3 based STMicroelectronics STM32F217 controller with a Xilinx Spartan-6 low-cost FPGA (XC6SLX16) in one design.

There are numerous development tools for either ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers or FPGA kits, but this is the first module in the market that merges both technologies on one board, although it is absolutely common to have a microcontroller next to an FPGA, performing tasks that cannot be integrated in the FPGA in a cost-effective way.

High costs for the adequate IP cores and for the additionally needed resources in the FPGA very often require an implementation in favor of a two-chip solution. Particularly the use of standard communication interfaces like Ethernet, USB and CAN are in most cases cheaper and easier to implement on a microcontroller.

ST CAN chip

supports "partial networking" for improved fuel efficiency and emissions in auto apps

Toni McConnel   10/17/2011 9:25 AM EDT

http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-products/electronic-product-reviews/processors/4229589/ST-CAN-chip-supports-partial-networking?cid=NL_Automotive&Ecosystem=automotive-design

The L99PM72PXP is a new member of ST’s family of power management system ICs that integrates both High-Speed CAN (HS-CAN) and LIN physical layers, providing all the functions needed to build up a complete Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for car body applications.

Its features are tailored to particular uses such as in climate control modules and door control units, as well as seat modules, trunk and trailer modules, sunroof and rear-view modules.
Unlike standard CAN transceivers or system-basis chips, the L99PM72PXP is able to monitor the CAN bus autonomously, without the module’s main processor being active.

It activates the module only when a correctly addressed wake-up signal is detected.

By allowing parts of the CAN network to be deactivated in this way, the L99PM72PXP contributes to reduce overall electrical energy consumption.
Advanced fail-safe functionality is an additional and unique feature which improves the sustainability and reliability of automotive electronic control units.

Built-in features such as supervision of the microcontroller, supply voltages and temperatures provide protection against causes of failure. In addition, cost-efficient peripheral functions such as high-side and low-side gate drivers, operational amplifiers and voltage regulators reduce the number of external components and lower overall system costs.
The chip will help car makers respond to changing new-car legislation in major markets worldwide, aiming to save fuel and reduce emissions. In Europe, Euro 6 regulations will replace Euro 5 in 2014, and the average CO2 emissions limit will fall to 95g/km by 2020. Chinese 4 standards, similar to Euro 4, came into force in China in 2011 and the city of Beijing is planning to adopt Chinese 5. In the USA, Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements for passenger cars will increase from 30.4 to 37.8 mpg by 2016 and 50.6 mpg by 2025.
One of the ways to meet these increasingly stringent regulations is to reduce the energy consumed by systems such as door electronics and climate controls.

ST’s new IC achieves this by allowing modules to be turned off individually when not being used, taking advantage of "partial networking."

This is a new feature in the latest CAN specification, ISO 11898-6, and could reduce an average vehicle’s CO2 emission by more than 2g/km.

Key features:

  • Two 5 V voltage regulators for microcontroller and peripheral supply
  • No electrolytic capacitor required on regulator outputs
  • Ultra low quiescent current in standby modes
  • Programmable reset generator for power-on and undervoltage
  • Configurable window watchdog and fail safe output
  • LIN 2.1 compliant (SAEJ2602 compatible) transceiver
  • Advanced high speed CAN transceiver (ISO 11898-2/-5 and SAE J2284 compliant) with local failure and bus failure diagnosis and selective wake-up functionality according to ISO 11898-6
  • Complete 3 channel contact monitoring interface with programmable cyclic sense functionality
  • Programmable periodic system wake-up feature
  • ST SPI interface for mode control and diagnosis
  • 5 fully protected high-side drivers with internal 4-channel PWM generator
  • 2 low-side drivers with active Zener clamping
  • 4 Internal PWM timers
  • 2 operational amplifiers with rail-to-rail outputs (VS) and low voltage inputs
  • Temperature warning and thermal shutdown

The L99PM72PXP is housed in a PowerSSO-36 package and is scheduled for volume production in Q3 2012, priced at $2.95 for orders up to 1000 units. Alternative pricing options may be available for larger order quantities.

Introduces the Market’s Smallest 3-Axis Analog Gyroscope

Innovative sensors from the market leader drive the adoption of advanced motion user interfaces in all kinds of consumer applications

GENEVA, March 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications and the leading supplier of MEMS for consumer and portable applications(1) has extended its motion-sensor portfolio with the market’s smallest 3-axis analog-output gyroscope. Housed inside an ultra-small 4x4x1mm3 package, ST’s newest gyroscope combines superior performance and reliability with smart power management and design flexibility, advancing adoption of high-precision gesture control and intuitive user interfaces in mobile phones, tablets, game controllers and other consumer devices.

All of ST’s MEMS gyroscopes employ an industry-unique concept of a single sensing structure for motion measurement along all three orthogonal axes(2). This innovative design approach eliminates all interference between the axes, significantly increasing accuracy and reliability in a wide range of consumer and industrial applications. The Company has introduced more than 40 gyroscopes over past two years and boosted its market share in gyroscopes for consumer and mobile applications from less than 1% in 2009 to 30% in 2010.

ST’s L3G462A gyroscope provides accurate angular-rate detection with a separate output for each of the three axes.

The full scale of +/- 625dps accurately measures gestures and movements of different types and speeds, enabling applications from navigation to motion-activated user interface and gaming.

The analog interface ensures very fast response with low latency and offers flexibility in external filtering capabilities and fine-tuning of key parameters to the individual application requirements.

The gyroscope’s extremely compact design eliminates the layout and placement issues common with existing bulkier solutions, without penalty in performance or reliability. The unparalleled stability over temperature (+/- 0.04dps/degrees C) and sensitivity (+/- 0.017%/degrees C) significantly improves measurement accuracy and the low noise level (0.017dps/sqrtHz) guarantees high precision in movement and gesture recognition.

ST’s newest 3-axis analog-output gyroscope can operate with any supply voltage in the range of 2.4 to 3.6V and the power-down and sleep-to-wake modes contribute to the reduction in power consumption of the entire system.

Volume production is scheduled for the end of Q3 2011 and the unit price is $3.5 in quantities of 1000 pieces.

For further information on ST’s complete MEMS portfolio go to www.st.com/mems.

(2) There are three main types of angular motion: yaw is rotation around the vertical axis; roll is rotation around the front-to-back axis and pitch is the rotation around the side-to-side axis.
